Now, 99% of Vietnamese crude oil, consisting of around 16-17mil tonnes per year, is transported by foreign oil tankers but a new government plan seeks to develop a fleet of oil tankers with the goal of capturing 30% of oil transport revenue. In the initial stages, the fleet will be responsible for the transportation of crude oil from the Vietnamese continental shelf to the Dung Quat oil refinery. By 2020, the fleet is expected to include ten Aframax tankers. Aframax oil tankers are popular around the world due to their safety - they have a double hull and a loading capacity of around 100,000 tonnes - making them the ideal choice for an oil tanker fleet. "In future, we hope that Vietnam's shipyards can build similar kinds of ships so that we can buy them locally," PetroVietnam Transportation Company (PV Trans Co) Bui Tho Manh said. Meanwhile, Poseidon M, PV Trans' first Aframax oil tanker, recorded a turnover of US$3.6mil after six months of operation.
